Before the Quest
The quest began when Kronos had Luke steal the Master Bolt and the Helm of Darkness. Zeus immediately blamed Poseidon. Meanwhile, Hades had the Fury Alecto try to kill Percy Jackson, thinking he stole the helm. Ares managed to catch Luke, but Kronos helped Luke manipulate Ares, to help start a war between the gods.
Starting the Quest
Percy makes it to Camp Half-Blood after being attacked by a minotaur. His mother was kidnapped in the process and thought to be dead. During a game of Capture The Flag, Percy is claimed by Poseidon. He accepts the quest of rescuing the Master Bolt, and gets a prophecy from the Oracle. He then starts his voyage to the Underworld to confront Hades, the one who he believes stole the Master Bolt.
Percy, along with Annabeth and Grover, takes a bus to New Jersey. On the bus, they are ambushed by the Furies and fight their way out, destroying the bus in the process. They walk into Aunty Em's Gnome Emporium where Aunty Em invites them in, and gives the some food. She then asks for a picture. She revealed herself to be Medusa, and tries to kill them but Percy slays her and sends her head to Olympus. The next morning, Percy awakes to find that Grover found a pink poodle named Gladiola. The reward for returning her gets them the money they needed for a train out of New Jersey.
They get off the train, and visited the Gateway Arch. They go up to the top deck. Percy is alone waiting for the next cart down, when Echidna and the Chimera attack. He flees into the Mississippi River where a naiad tells him to go to Santa Monica before he enters the Underworld.
They get back on the train and head farther west. When they get to Denver Ares meets them, and tells them get his shield from Waterland. They go to Waterland, only to find it was rigged with a trap by Hephaestus. They get the shield, and get it back to Ares. He gives them a truck to ride in, and a backpack full of things. They get on the truck, and leave Denver.
Getting to the Underworld
They get off, and go into The Lotus Hotel and Casino (home of the Lotus Eaters) where they stay for five days before they realize they are pulled out of time while they are there. Once they leave, they go to Santa Monica where a naiad gives Percy three pearls, saying it was a gift from his father. He then goes into DOA Recording Studios where Charon lets them in after being bribed.
They travel through the Underworld, and find the pit of Tartarus. Grover is almost pulled in due to magic shoes he was wearing. They leave, and go to Hades' Palace. They enter, and demand the Master Bolt. Hades accuses Percy of stealing the bolt and his Helm of Darkness, and proves he has the Master Bolt in the backpack given to him by Ares. Percy uses the pearls to leave with Annabeth and Grover.
Percy realizes Ares set them up, and then he finds him on a beach. Ares explains everything to Percy, and they fight. Kronos prevents Ares from killing Percy, and the trio leaves with the Master Bolt and Helm of Darkness. The take a plane back to New York despite the risks of being blasted out of the sky by Zeus.
After the quest is over, Luke reveals that he works for Kronos, and attempts to kill Percy by setting a pit scorpion on him. After Percy is healed, Annabeth tells him she's going back to San Francisco to live with her father.
