Kronos' Scythe is a powerful scythe, and Kronos' weapon. It was given to Kronos by Gaea to slice his father, Ouranus into pieces and become king. His own son, Zeus used it to chop Kronos into pieces and send him to Tartarus. It was originally wielded by Luke as a sword known as Backbiter, a sword made of steel and Celestial Bronze. It's described in myth as a flint blade or diamond or a mythical metal called adamant.
Kronos' scythe was given to the original Perseus by Athena and Hermes, along with the Helm of Darkness to kill Medusa, they claimed that the scythe was the only thing sharp enough to decapitate the Gorgon. Perseus successfully performs his quest and returns the scythe to the gods, along with the Helm of Darkness. It was also used by Zeus against Typhon when he first emerged though it was unsuccessful in defeating him. It is unknown how Luke Castellan got a hold of the scythe in The Lightning Thief.Sword Fighting Arena, in the form of Backbiter. Luke used the sword to rip a portal and vanish.
Luke used the sword to fight Thalia.
Luke did not have his sword, as it was being reforged back into a scythe by the Telekhines that work for Kronos.
Kronos is seen using his scythe many times throughout the book. In his final fight with Percy, Kronos turns his scythe back into Backbiter because Percy challenged him to a sword fight. During the battle the sword is knocked into Hestia's hearth, but when Kronos tries to retrieve it, she super heats it so he cannot touch it. With the destruction of Kronos, it's reduced to a pool of molten metal. It is unknown if Hestia did this or if it was destroyed when Kronos was defeated.
Kronos' scythe is an extremely powerful weapon. One hit can release lots of energy into a person, severing their soul from their body. Because of its blade, which is made of half steel and half celestial bronze, it can harm both mortals and immortals. It can also be turned back into its sword form, Backbiter.
The scythe is six feet long and also the blade is close to the lengh of the hilt.
- Luke (In The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of The Labyrinth) - as Backbiter.
- Kronos (In The Battle of The Labyrinth and The Last Olympian) - as a scythe. (Real Form)
- Because Kronos was the Lord of Time and Reaper of Souls, the mythical beings Father Time and the Grim Reaper carry a Scythe.
- In some myths, it is a sickle instead of a scythe.
- In some myths the scythe is made of diamond in others it is made of a "heavenly" material called adamant.
- In the original Perseus myth it was the only weapon sharp enough to slay Medusa but in The Lightning Thief Percy slays Medusa with Anaklumos.
