Koios, meaning Axis of Heaven, is one of the Greek Titans, the giant sons and daughters of Ouranos and Gaea. He was the Titan of Intellect and the Poles. An alternate name for Koios was Polos, meaning "of the northern pole."
History
Edit
He and his brothers ambushed their father when he descended to lie with Gaea. Koios, his brothers Hyperion, Iapetus, and Krios were posted at the corners of the world, where they seized hold of him and held their father fast, while Kronos castrated him with a sickle. Koios stood at the north while his brothers stood at the east, south, and west respectively.
Koios, as god of the axis of heaven around which the constellations revolved, was probably also a god of heavenly oracles, just as his wife Phoebe presided over the oracles of the axis of earth Delphi - a common inherited by their grandson Apollo.
Along with the other Titans, Koios was overthrown by Zeus and the other Olympian gods. After the Titan War, he and his brothers were banished into Tartarus by Zeus and the other Olympians.
Trivia
Edit
- Rhea and Koios are apparently the only two Titans that fought on the first war altough weren`t mentioned to be at Kronos' side on the second.
