If I'm going to burn, I might as well burn bright.

–Frank threatening Caligula in The Tyrant's Tomb.

Frank Zhang (also known as Fai Zhang by his Grandmother) is a Roman demigod, the son of Mars and Emily Zhang, as well as a legacy of Poseidon. Frank is one of the seven demigods mentioned in the Prophecy of Seven and is the current male Praetor of the Twelfth Legion Fulminata. He is currently in a relationship with fellow Praetor Hazel Levesque.

History[]

Early Life[]

On June 5, 1994, Frank was born to Mars, the Roman god of war, and mortal military soldier Emily Zhang. From his mother, he is a descendant of Periclymenus, who was a grandson of Poseidon and a member of the Argonauts, hence making him a legacy of Poseidon. His whole family was blessed by the god with the power to shift into any kind of animal, mythical or living from human form. In the absence of his immortal father, Frank's grandmother helped to raise him after his mother died in a military accident in Afghanistan a while before her son turned 16 and went to Camp Jupiter.

Poseidon

Poseidon, his divine ancestor.

Frank combined his ancestral gift with the powers that he inherited from his divine parent. As such, he was considered to be dangerously powerful, and it was decreed that he would have a short life. During the night of his birth, Juno appeared to his family and pointed out a piece of timber in the hearth, warning that if it was burned entirely, he would die.

In school, he learned some Canadian French and won a spelling bee.

Death of Mother and Journey South[]

On the day of his mother’s funeral his grandmother informed him of their family history and told him that he is the son of a Roman god. She explained that his life force was tied to a piece of wood, which she gave to him, and told him to keep it safe. His grandmother gave him the piece of firewood and told him that he would soon be leaving to go to Camp Jupiter that night.

Lupa and her wolf pack soon arrived at the Zhang Mansion, and he went through the usual process of proving his strength at the Wolf Manor. Frank arrived at Camp Jupiter about a month after Jason Grace disappeared, and was still on Probatio when Percy Jackson arrived.

Explaining his Lineage[]

When Frank arrived at Camp, his grandmother instructed him to go to the Praetor and tell her that his great-grandfather was Shen Lun and to beg forgiveness for what Shen Lun did (it is later revealed he created an earthquake accidentally which almost entirely destroyed Camp Jupiter), though she refused to tell him what he did at the time. When Frank arrived at camp, he went to Reyna Ramírez-Arellano and did as he was instructed. Reyna told him she judged people by their own merits, not what their ancestors did. However, she did tell him not to mention Shen Lun to the other campers at Camp Jupiter, as they'd be less forgiving than her.

When Percy Jackson reaches Camp Jupiter, one of the Gorgons gets hold of Frank, almost killing him. Percy uses the water of the Tiber River to forge giants' hands, causing the Gorgons to release Frank as Percy finally destroyed them by ripping them apart in large whirlpools. Hazel Levesque helps pull him to safety after the whirlpools Percy created. Frank then retrieves 2 ceramic vials each with blood from the right and left sides of the Gorgons as Spoils of War.

Frank has always been good at archery and hoped that it would be Apollo who would claim him, especially since he's only been at Camp Jupiter for six weeks after the death of his mother, Emily Zhang. Frank later meets up with Hazel and Percy again and they work together in the evening's war games. Frank has Hazel guide them through the tunnels underneath the fortifications and Percy destroys the water cannons. Frank then climbs up the wall and starts taking out the opposing team using his specially-made arrows. His efforts enable his cohort to break into the building and earn him an award for being the first to get on the fortifications. The three of them make a surprising win for the Fifth Cohort.

Mars GN

Mars, his father

After the games are over Mars appears and claims Frank as his son. He also reveals Thanatos' capture and issues a quest to free him. Mars says that Frank must go along with Percy and another of Frank's choices. Frank is then subsequently proclaimed a centurion by Reyna and the Senators of Camp Jupiter. He chooses Hazel to go along with him. During the journey, Frank harbors a secret that his life will end in flame on a piece of wood due to the many powers that he possesses. During the time Frank enters one of Hazel's blackouts, he tells Hazel about his firewood lifeline and entrusts the piece of firewood to her. Along the way, Gaea plays with Frank, knowing that he is one of the Seven that will be her downfall. Frank finds confidence thanks to the goddess of rainbows, Iris who tells him to give the stick to someone he can trust. Later on, he gives it to Hazel, hoping he can trust her with it. To get away from Iris's shop, he battles three basilisks alone. Using Mars' spear, he summons Gray, a vicious fighting skeleton who destroys the basilisks.

When the group finally reaches Canada, he speaks with Mars and Grandma Zhang who encourages him to find his hidden power and save his friends. He later finds that he has the ability to change into any animal of his choice due to him being a legacy of Poseidon. However, the animal has to be within reason and this ability works best if he knows the animal well and if he is in a life or death situation. He battles the giant, Alcyoneus, and defeats him with Hazel's help by dragging him out of Alaska where he is invincible. He is able to free Thanatos at the cost of the firewood which his life is tied to, making it much smaller but not gone. He also harbors feelings for Hazel, which is mutual, and the two finally share a kiss as they win the battle against Alcyoneus just outside of Alaska. He works with Hazel and Percy to retrieve weapons from the water, then climbs aboard the chariot with Arion who takes them to Camp Jupiter.

Reaching the hills above Camp Jupiter, Frank gets to meet Tyson, who considers him another brother, and Mrs. O'Leary. Together they charge into battle against Polybotes' army. Frank takes the lead of the Fifth Cohort and used his shapeshifting powers to destroy enemies and defend the camp. Then, he gathers with the campers in the Forum upon the arrival of Camp Half-Blood in the Argo II.

The Mark of Athena[]

During the disarray in Camp Jupiter, after the Argo II fires upon the Romans, Frank turns into a dragon in order to save Piper McLean and Jason Grace, who were knocked unconscious by the angry mob of Romans. He then carries them safely to the deck of the fleeing Argo II. While Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Coach Hedge are helping Piper and Jason below deck, Frank is guarding Leo Valdez. He is suspicious towards him and asks him if his name is really Leo, and not Sammy Valdez, and gets a negative response.

Frank cannot help but be amazed by the ship as Leo takes him through decks while he estimates damage done to the vessel. When the Argo II docks on the Salt Lake in Utah, Frank goes with Percy and Annabeth to the city to find some tar for repairs, not satisfied that Leo and Hazel are going together to look for celestial bronze and lime.

After Percy and Annabeth fall asleep together in the stables, Frank is the one who finds them and tells them they are in trouble. Shortly after, the team decides that Percy, Frank and Coach Hedge should go look for Phorcys. Inside the Georgia Aquarium, Frank and Percy expect a trap, as a tourist guide named Kate, takes them to Phorcys. When they arrive, Kate leads Coach Hedge further into the complex while talking about different monsters, and leaves Frank and Percy alone with Phorcys. When Phorcys traps them both in a big water tank, Frank panics and turns into a koi goldfish, so he could breathe. Luckily, Coach Hedge comes to their aid and together they escape back to the Argo II.

When the team decides to go to Charleston, South Carolina, Leo dispatches Buford carrying dirty laundry, including Frank's only reserve pants, to distract Roman Eagles. Later on the way to Charleston, Frank goes to Annabeth's room and asks her to help him understand the Chinese Hand Cuffs, which he had been previously teased for. He unknowingly gives her advice that will help her survive in future.

Arriving at a harbor in Charleston, the team splits up again. Annabeth, Hazel, and Piper go to The Battery, Percy goes underwater to speak to water spirits, and Frank, Leo and Jason go to the Civil War museum. Shortly after, they are all attacked by Romans and have to fight at Fort Sumter to escape.

Right before the Argo II gets attacked by Skolopendra, Frank gets furious learning that Leo and Hazel held each other's hands. While Frank and Leo are trapped in Camp Fish-Blood, they have a conversation where Leo explains why he and Hazel held hands and Frank confesses his "burning stick" curse to Leo.

In the Mediterranean Sea, they get ambushed and boarded by Chrysaor and his dolphin men. Everyone except Frank get captured while Percy duels Chrysaor. Frank then helps Percy frighten the dolphin men by pretending to be cursed by Dionysus, causing them to abandon the Argo II and their captain in panic.

When they arrive in Rome, they dock the ship in a park. Percy goes with Annabeth to escort her to her mission, Piper, Jason and Coach Hedge stay at the ship and Frank, Hazel and Leo go looking for Nico di Angelo. When Hazel discovers a secret doorway that could possibly lead them to the location of Nico, Frank and Leo wait above the entrance while she explores the tunnels. Leo then offers his help to Frank in finding a solution to his curse. They get attacked by Eidolons, but quickly lose them by following Hazel. In Archimedes's workshop, Eidolons take control of automatons and quickly knock Frank and Hazel unconscious. Two of them are saved by Leo cracking open the fortune cookie he got from Nemesis. After that, Frank turns into a weasel and makes it to the surface through a hole Leo manages to drill through using a hydraulic screw and the Archimedes Sphere. Leo then hacks into Coach Hedge's TV channels using a transmitter that Frank brought to the surface and called Hedge to help Leo and Hazel get to the surface as well. Then they went to help Percy, Jason and Piper in defeating Otis and Ephialtes and save Annabeth.

The House of Hades[]

Frank joins the rest of the crew in the mess hall to talk about new information that Hazel Levesque, his girlfriend, received from the goddess, Hecate. Frank talks about how his Grandma thought that seven was an unlucky number and that it was a "ghost" number. Frank talks about how his grandmother didn't like that there were seven demigods going on a quest and how they were searching for the Doors of Death during July, the seventh month. Frank recalls that in China, the seventh month was the day that the spirit world and the human world were the closest.

Frank has had his father's Greek and Roman personalities, Ares/Mars, arguing inside of his head ever since the war that they believe was started by Leo Valdez. The voices in his head have been telling him that he needs to "kill" Leo.

Frank heads up to the upper deck of the Argo II and joins Hazel to look at the scenery of Venice, Italy below them. The five notice strange monsters that take the form of a dog when veiled by the Mist. They decide that they are going to return the stolen book that they found to its original owner. Frank volunteers and Nico and Hazel decide to go with him. As they stroll around Venice, they realize that the monsters exhale poison and Hazel is poisoned. Nico tells Frank to turn into an eagle to get Hazel out of the area of fire, but not before a man tells them he can heal her and to quickly come into a house.

Katobleps

Katobleps, the beasts he destroyed

The man turns out to be Triptolemus, and once he discovers that Hazel is the daughter of Pluto, he refuses to help, as his sister Persephone had been abducted by Pluto and forced to marry him. When Nico protests, he is turned into a plant, and it is up to Frank to try and persuade Triptolemus. He notices that the chariot Triptolemus once used has been disabled - having only one of the two snakes it needs to fly - and volunteers to find him a new one. Frank then proceeds to cleanse Venice of the katobleps, leaving only one, which his father Mars turns into a snake, at his request. Frank then gives Triptolemus the snake. He is so pleased that he turns Nico back into a human, heals Hazel, and gives them a way to get passed an ordeal they will have to face. Following these events, Frank finds that he seems to have 'grown into his own skin'.

Two days later, the crew of the Argo II is stopped by a bandit who wishes to rob them, and delivers a message:

This is a robbery. Send two of your party to the top of the cliff with all your valuables. No more than two. Leave the magic horse. No flying. No tricks. Just climb. I do mean all your valuables. Otherwise my turtle and I will destroy you. You have five minutes.

P.S. Don't even think about using your catapults.

Hazel and Jason volunteer to meet him, as Hazel can summon a large amount of gold to pay him off, and Jason can use the winds to catch her if she falls. While talking, Sciron demonstrates his skill with a gun and shoots a hole between Frank's feet. Frank then watches them face Sciron and outsmart him. A few days after this, Khione, the snow goddess, attacks the ship and places a 'wind bomb' onto it. She freezes most of the crew, including Frank, and sends Leo to Ogygia. When Frank defrosts, he discovers that Piper defeated Khione, but didn't manage to stop the bomb from exploding and sending them to the tip of Africa. The group searches for Leo, but cannot locate him until he leaves Ogygia and contacts them.

They meet Leo in the city of Valletta and then locate the House of Hades. Using the gift Triptolemus gave them - magical grains that they made into barley cakes - they managed to get through it safely, having to drink from a chalice of poison to proceed.

After reuniting the Frank and the others went to the necromantium. The Eventually came to a trap and were separated. Frank, Jason, Piper, and Nico fought of a hoard of monsters. Nico used the scepter to summon dead legionnaires to battle but they would not listen to him because he is Greek. Then Jason tried, but he could not because he chose Greek the they would not obey him. After which Frank tried to command then but was not highly ranked enough to do so. So Jason gave him his Praetorship and they beat the monsters.

They caught up with Hazel and Leo after Percy And Annabeth returned from Tartarus. They fought with Clytius until Hecate showed up and defeated him. When the ceiling was about to collapse on them, Nico and Hazel shadow traveled them to the surface. The met up with Hedge and Reyna and had a picnic. The discussed their next move and chose to send the Athena Pantheon back with Nico, Reyna and Coach Hedge while the seven went to Mount Olympus. That evening Frank and Jason were talking about the duties of a praetor.

The Blood of Olympus[]

In Ithaca, Frank flew in and carried an injured Jason back to the Argo II.

A few days later, Frank met the rest of the seven for breakfast in the dining room, sitting next to Hazel and using their cereal bowls to flatten out a map of Greece, looking like an old married couple. Frank turned into a bulldog when he heard Hedge's voice, and became annoyed at Leo. The group discussed subduing Nike in Olympia, and Frank and Annabeth led the discussion, nodding at each other. Frank also pointed out the Greek and Roman camps may be separated as a strategy by the Giants. Frank agreed to go with Percy, Hazel, and Leo.

Frank and Hazel scouted the ruins on Arion and met up with Percy and Leo, almost getting into an argument about the measurements of America and Canada. Frank grabbed a pamphlet and began discussing the contents of the ruins with the others as Leo remained unimpressed and joking around. After Nike appeared, Frank caused her to separate into Nike and Victoria by asking which goddess she was. Frank and the others tried to reason with her, but they refused and made the Greeks and Romans fight each other (which Frank especially was annoyed about). He was even insulted by Nike for wanting to spare the Greeks. The four were chased into the stadium and hid in the crypt, making a plan to subdue Nike, then pretended to fight each other. Frank helped kill the Nikai by shapeshifting into a bear and smashing them. After they defeated her, Frank and the others found out one of the seven would die and needed a cure. They then took Nike back to the ship after he stuffed a sock in her mouth.

A few days later, Frank scouted Pylos, bringing Piper with him because her Charmspeak would be helpful. They slayed an ogre in a restaurant, defeated a pack of giant warthogs, and used the vegtables in the Cornucopia to kill Stymphalian birds. After the warthog destroyed his clothes, Piper took him shopping an assured him he didn't have to be self conscious. Frank met his relatives in Nestor's cave, but they were cold and distant around him due to him being Chinese and a son of Mars. They became friendlier after they learned he wouldn't stay long and gave him the Pylosian mint. Piper comforted him after and said his cousins were idiots, not knowing how great he was. He also confided in her about how he missed Vitellius, saying he would know more about the cure than anyone. After they got a ferry back to the ship, Frank said it was nice killing warthogs with her, and she gave him a big hug. Back on the ship, Frank told the seven what his cousins had told him.

On July 30th, the Seven arrived in Mykonos and he was the only one who didn't get gelato. Frank, Hazel, and Leo went to meet Apollo and Artemis on Delos, flying there on an eagle. Frank asked Hazel if she sensed any ghosts, then greeted the two gods. Frank was surprised at their appearances, saying they didn't look like twins, but Hazel said gods can look however they want to. Frank found out that Octavian was gathering forces, and about the fall of Delphi, then went with Hazel to get information from Artemis. Frank and Hazel then met up with Leo, telling him about the onagers and the monsters Octavian had gotten to help him. In return, Leo told them about his plan to sacrifice himself, needing both of their help. Frank became teary as Leo said he told them due to them being Romans: knowing about sacrifice. Leo then told him he had to make the call no one else was willing to make, like Mars told him. Frank then burst into tears, hugging both Hazel and Leo. He hated the plan, but agreed to it.

The next day, Frank discussed with the seven about Asclepius's house. He was worried about Leo when he wanted to go meet him, but he gave him the poison and a big hug, telling him to be careful. That night, he met the Seven for dinner and witheld Leo's plan from the others.

The next morning, Frank met Kekrops when he went on the ship, bonding with him over being lactose intolerant. He was annoyed when he discovered the Acrpolis was guarded with Onagers. He suggested giving up, but Kekrops promised to help them. Frank agreed for Percy, Annabeth, and Piper to sneak in while he and the others flew in with ballistae. He then made a plan with Annabeth and Hazel. Frank shapeshifted into a swarm of bees to go between Hazel and the others, updating them on the plan. Frank, Leo, Jason, and Hazel soon after helped the others fight the Giants, with Frank shooting arrows at them. However, soon ran out of arrows and tried to attack them, shapeshifting into a rhino, but they healed faster and he couldn't defeat them. But after the blood of olympus spilled, the Olympians rushed to their aid and he and Ares defeated an entire squadron of elephants, all while being an elaphant. He then congregated with the other gods.

The Seven were launched back to Camp Half-Blood and turned into a dragon, carrying Percy and Annabeth to camp. He then met up with Reyna, happily addressing each other, and gave orders to the Twelfth Legion Fulminata to attack. He pointed his sword forward, causing lightning to defeat a bunch of monsters. After Gaea rose, Frank put his hand on Percy's shoulder and said he couldn't fight Gaea: that part would only be Piper, Jason, and Leo. He saluted Jason and joined his legion. After the battle and Leo's death, Frank and Hazel tearfully told the remaining seven and Nico about Leo's sacrifice, with his arm around Hazel. They were angry at first, but they couldn't stay mad while Frank was crying and agreed it was a plan Leo would've done.

In the days after the battle, Frank and Hazel inspected the roman troops with Chiron and praised them for their bravery, taking up camp in the Strawberry Fields. He and Reyna thanked the entire camp and made a toast at a campfire, with Frank promising a new era of friendship between the camps and Reyna patting his shoulder in agreement. He promised they would all be welcome at Camp Jupiter with weekend visits, programs, and aid in times of need.

The night before he left, he visited Hazel in the Hades' Cabin and whispered in hushed tones while Nico ignored them. Frank then knocked on the wall next to his bed, saying he would be leaving tomorrow and wanted to thank him. Nico said he did great and was an honor to work with him, and Frank expressed his shock that he lived through it, especially with his firewood. Nico reassured him he wasn't close to death and that he and Hazel had a lot of adventures ahead of him, and had him promised he'd be good to his half-sister. Hazel questioned if he was threatening him, but Nico reassured her that he was a good guy. He then kissed Hazel and told Nico he could go to Camp Jupiter with them, but he refused. He then said he hoped to see him again, and he promised he will as the flower boy at his wedding. Frank then became flustered and ran off. He went back to Camp with the Romans the next day.

Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes[]

Right after finishing his narration of this book, Percy reveals that after the events of The Blood of Olympus, he, Frank, and the rest of the Seven started the tradition of monthly Argo II reunion parties and he is quite worried about being late to the current one.

The Chalice of the Gods[]

Percy mentions Frank when trudging along the banks of the River Elisson, remembering the time the two of them and Hazel were evading basilisks in California.

Between the Series[]

Several days after the destruction of Gaea and the death of Leo, a parchment scroll with a holographic message, sent from the resurrected Leo, came fluttering into Camp Half-Blood on the wind. Frank and Hazel Levesque, while angry at Leo for his long absence, are extremely relieved to learn that he is alive.

It can also be assumed that Frank rarely visits Camp Half-Blood, as Nico describes him and Hazel being busy "doing the Twelfth Legion thing" at Camp Jupiter.

Camp Jupiter Classified: A Probatio's Journal[]

As Frank walks past his father’s temple, a probatio named Claudia exits and laughs at him. About a week later when the Mess Hall was only serving oatmeal, he tells the frustrated legion he ordered donuts from Bombilo's Coffee Shop.

A few days later, he and Reyna stop a fight between the first and third cohorts after a couple from the first break into the Bathhouse for a date, only to find it full of dead rats and accuse the lifeguard, from the third who had a crush on the girl of putting them there. They listen to both sides and have the two cohorts clean up the dead rats together. The following day the praetors cancel an afternoon march to looking into the decompostible bags after they break and animal droppings rain down on camp. That night during the gladiator fights the colosseum floods and he, Reyna and the centurions look for the culprit. The following morning the legion is called to assemble only to be ambush by the ballistas on the sentry tower. After the attack ends and the Ambrosia and Nectar supplies vanish, he and Reyna investigate and he closes off his father’s temple. After going over the evidence they believe Claudia is behind everything but he convinces Reyna to wait until they have sufficient evidence against her before bringing the legacy of Mercury before the Senate. A day or so later Janice and Blaise come to him and explain their plan when Claudia is confined to her bunk. He and Reyna hear Claudia out and they bring in her friends saying they approve of her plan, but has Frank fly her in rather then Aquila. On the way there, he crashes and breaks his wing-arm and is rushed back to camp to be healed. When he is healed he goes with two eagles to extract Claudia, Janice, and Blaise after they get the ancile.

The Trials of Apollo[]

The Hidden Oracle[]

Frank is not present at Camp Half-Blood when the depowered Apollo and Meg McCaffrey arrive, so Nico di Angelo explains where he and the rest of the Seven are now, while showing Leo's holographic message.

The Dark Prophecy[]

After Meg McCaffrey recalls the Prophecy she received in the Cave of Trophonius sitting on the Throne of Memory, Calypso and Josephine interpret the prophecy, and Leo clarifies that 'the changeling lord' refers to Frank, and the prophecy states that he will have to face a dire challenge.

The Burning Maze[]

Leo mentions Frank when telling Apollo about Caligula’s attack on Camp Jupiter, saying he survived the battle.

The Tyrant's Tomb[]

Frank and Reyna greet Apollo and Meg McCaffrey when they bring Jason’s coffin to Camp Jupiter. Saddened by the death of his comrade, he agrees to a state funeral and to complete Jason‘s dream by the weekend to honor him, while the praetors allow Meg and Apollo to stay as guests. While Apollo is unconscious, Meg informs the son of Mars about the prophecy they were given in the Burning Maze. When Apollo wakes up a day and a half later, Frank flies into their room as a raven, and asks Apollo to come with him to New Rome to talk with Tyson and Ella.

As he and Apollo go to meet up with Tyson and Ella, he explains the details of the battle. Leo had given them a twenty-four-hour in advance warning when he landed, but the casualties were still heavy. Most of their dead had disappeared, and the Romans feared that their fallen would return and fight them with the hordes of Tarquin's undead. They arrive just as Tyson is getting lines of prophecy tattooed onto his skin by Ella, much to Apollo's shock.  As Ella recites a line of the books related to Tarquin, she mentions Frank's stick, and he takes Apollo and leaves for the funeral. Before they can light the pyre, Lupa arrives and asks to speak with Apollo alone. When he returns, he tells Frank and Reyna that they will find out what Lupa told him during the following day’s senate meeting.

Frank is seen in the Senate House with Reyna. After hearing that the gods can aid them if they open Tarquin’s tomb, he and Reyna approve a quest. The son of Mars tries to volunteer himself, but Reyna reminds him of his praetor duties. Later that day, he meets Apollo in the Field of Mars when he takes Hannibal out for a walk. He tells Apollo that he has accepted that his life force is tied to a piece of wood, despite Apollo's obvious shock and consideration that Frank may be getting reckless. Just then Hazel, Meg, and Lavinia arrive, he and the daughter of Pluto have a quick conversation before her group heads out.

After looking into the prophecy, Frank and Reyna inform Meg and Apollo that in order to invoke the help of the gods, they must sacrifice one. They specify that it must be the soundless god, and Apollo deduces that he must be working with Triumvirate Holdings to blackout demigod communications. Having no other options, Frank grants emergency powers to Apollo, Meg, and Reyna, allowing them to find the soundless god.

The following day, he sits at the officer's table at the Mess Hall and calls the legion to ready for war drills, which practice boarding ships.

The next day, he and Hazel bring a red Chevy Silverado for Reyna, Meg, and Apollo to use on their quest. When Reyna demonstrates the defensive and masking functions of her cloak, the son of Mars is surprised by this, and studies his to see if it can do the same as Reyna drives away. Later, before the battle, he sets up the legion in Caldecott Tunnel, installing defensive munitions before the final battle. He also sends commandos lead by Michael Kahale to slow down the emperors.

He greets Apollo and Meg when they are taken to his command post and learns from Terminus that zombies are attacking New Rome via the sewers. As he and the remaining twelve legionnaires are defending the entrance to camp, the emperors pull up on chariots pulled by de-winged Pegasi and demand surrender. Frank refuses, instead calling spolia opima, single combat to the death, to which the emperors accept, and Frank challenges Caligula. Apollo then arrives and joins the fight, although Frank says he is messing up his plan and tells Apollo to run when he says to, then goes to continue his fight as Commodus engages Apollo, while both sides of the battle cautiously watch out of striking range. Frank and Apollo lure the god-emperors into the tunnel, and as the latter engages Commodus still, Frank and Caligula circle one another cautiously and strike. He turns into a swift and takes out one of Caligula's eyes; in response, Caligula swats the son of Mars onto the wall and, when he reverts to human form, stabs him in the back, a hit that would have been fatal had his cloak not protected him. As Caligula is recovering, Frank jumps up and pushes Caligula to the wall, choking him and making his face turn purple. He tells Apollo to run, and after reminding Caligula of his murder of Jason Grace, the son of Mars ignites his stick, triggering an explosion and encases them both in flames. Caligula is killed while Commodus is left severely injured, allowing Apollo to finish him off.

Miraculously, he survives, at the cost of his hair and eyebrows, and Arion returns him to camp, where he passes out, though he is saved when he is immediately rushed to a medical tent. When he wakes up explains that Ella told him how to kill the emperors and he did so. Apollo theorizes that by taking his fate into his own hands in such a manner, Frank changed it so that his lifeforce is no longer tied to a stick, leaving Frank free to live his life without the threat of death hanging over his head. It's also postulated that although unlikely, Juno may have intervened to save Frank as she likes him.

A few days later, Frank officiates the mass funeral for the casualties of the battle. At the senate meeting, he congratulates the legion on their victory and approves the promotions of Hazel Levesque to praetor and Lavinia Asimovcenturion of the fifth cohort. He also presents Apollo and Meg with gifts, Apollo with his godly bow and Meg with her seeds. In the morning, he and Hazel say their goodbyes to Apollo and Meg.

The Tower of Nero[]

After Apollo becomes a god again, he visits Camp Jupiter and the son of Mars tells him of how they are rebuilding after the last attack that how Jason’s temple project is going. He also demonstrates that he has finally figured out how to turn his cloak into a sweater wrap to which Hazel rolls her eyes.

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard[]

The Ship of the Dead[]

When Percy and Annabeth have lunch with Magnus Chase and Alex Fierro, Percy mentions the Praetor when Alex, the child of Loki, displays his/her shapeshifting abilities.

Personality[]

Frank is very kind. He is a very good friend and is willing to give everyone a chance. Due to his past, he is unwilling to judge people and was the only one at Camp Jupiter not scared of Nico. Frank is insanely loyal to his friends and cares about them deeply, like when he stopped Percy from his fatal flaw. As the series goes on, he even becomes reckless for his friends, like when he slammed a minor god into a wall for not healing Hazel and Nico fast enough. Frank is also a very good listener, listening to Coach Hedge when he confided about missing his wife and unborn child.

Because Frank is a son of Mars, Frank has a lot of anger and rage inside of him. Frank can get very angry and irritated sometimes, making him huff like a bear. After his mom died, he was so furious that he destroyed his grandmothers fine China, even though he knew she may punish him. He also wanted to slam Nico into a wall in anger after he couldn't protect Hazel, letting her be poisoned.

Frank used to be very self conscious due to being bullied when he was young by his grandmother and his peers and would hide his body, being self conscious about it. He had extreme self hatred and low self esteem, made worse by when he went to Camp Jupiter and thought he was unworthy to be in the legion. He thought it was a mistake that Reyna let him join and that he only messed things up. Due to this, he would be very awkward and nervous, like when he snapped crackers while trying to give them to Hazel. Even when he had accomplishments, he would feel unworthy, like when he was promoted to Centurion. His low self esteem got better at the end of The Son of Neptune, but by the next book, it became worse after Ares and Mars would speak in his head. Frank felt like he acted like a buffoon in front of everybody, made worse by being teased by Leo. He even believed Leo when he said he wasn't worth much.

Another product of his low self esteem is fire. He would constantly worry about his lifeline once he found out about it and didn't tell anybody, other than Hazel, Percy, and eventually Leo and Nico. He developed a fear of fire, made worse when his grandmother may have died in a fire. He began to conquer it throughout the series though, like when he decided that Hazel would carry his lifeline and when he burned his stick to rescue Thanatos. However, he still had a big fear of it, especially with Leo's fire powers. But fire began to no longer have an effect on his life when Leo gave him a fireproof bag to carry his lifeline in.

Frank's self esteem also began to improve when he got the blessing of Mars and a makeover from his father. He began to cover his fat less and was more confident in his appearance. He became more bold and began to take risks, shapeshifting more and trusting people.

Over the course of the series, Frank became a leader, going from Probatio to Centurion to Praetor. Frank took on a leadership role in the House of Hades by leading a legion of ghosts and defeating hundreds of monsters. Due to this, people's perception of Frank began to change, with people seeing him as a brave, terrifying leader, instead of a cute little panda bear. After this, Frank took a leadership role with Annabeth on the Argo II and helped lead a charge into the Parthenon, and later lead the Twelfth Legion Fulminata with Reyna at the Siege of Camp Half-Blood.

All of this culminated in the The Trials of Apollo series, when Frank became more of a leader and extremely reckless, almost killing himself at the Battle of the New Moon. This worried Hazel and Reyna, who thought he should be careful due to his lifeline. But Frank had no fear of his lifeline anymore and was prepared to sacrifice himself for his camp, valuing others over himself. He realized that him sacrificing himself was the only way to save the others and avenge Jason. Because of this, he spoke to Ella in secret and planned to sacrifice himself to kill Caligula. However, due to taking control of his destiny and accepting it, Frank was able to forge a new destiny for himself free of his curse.

Frank also became more appreciative of his Chinese-Canadian heritage. As a child, Frank would be annoyed by the stories and the superstitions his grandmother would tell, made worse by the racist bullies at this school. He became even more ashamed when he found out that Shen Lun destroyed Camp Jupiter during the San Francisco Earthquake. But after he found out about his shapeshifting powers, he became appreciative of his ancestors and heritage, even meeting them in Pylos.

Frank has a bit of a nerdy streak, liking Mythomagic and winning French spelling bees.

Appearance[]

As seen in The Son of Neptune, Frank is a teenage boy of Chinese descent with a large and stocky frame. He has a babyish face with brown eyes and close-cropped black hair; according to Percy, Frank's face doesn't really work with his burly build and his military haircut, and the contrast makes him look like a toddler who'd taken steroids and joined the Marines. He has also been described by Hazel as looking like a Koala bear with muscles and by Leo as looking like a baby sumo wrestler. His Camp Jupiter tattoo is composed of an image of two crossed spears above the initials SPQR and a single bar line beneath, given to him as a requirement for centurionship despite the fact that he had not been a part of Camp Jupiter for an entire year.

After being given the Blessing of Mars in The House of Hades, Frank's appearance changed dramatically. He became taller, and he lost his babyish face, becoming even more handsome. His body became stronger and more imposing as his shoulders became broader and more muscular. He also lost his stomach fat, becoming lean, but muscular. According to Hazel, he became "warlike handsome" and was described as fit enough to play football.

By The Tyrant's Tomb Frank's natural weight caught up with his magical growth spurt, Apollo saying he returned to being a "big, girthy guy" with chubby "baby cheeks", only larger and more muscular than before.

Frank is very tall. He was 6'3 in The Son of Neptune and grew 2-3 inches taller after receiving the Blessing of Mars. This would make him either 6'5 or 6'6.

Abilities[]

As one of the seven, a child of Mars and the descendant of Poseidon through the god's grandson Periclymenus, Frank is immensely powerful being able to singlehandedly defeat huge mobs of monsters and giants as well as accomplishing many other impressive feats.

  • Latin: As a Roman demigod, Frank can speak and understand a degree of Latin.
  • French (limited): Frank can speak some Canadian French, having studied it in school, though he is not fluent. It is so different from Hazel's Louisiana French that they can barely communicate.
  • Chinese (limited): Frank can speak and read some Chinese, though he is not fluent.
  • Leadership: Despite having poor self esteem at the start, Frank is shown to be an amazing leader as he led the Fifth Cohort to victory in The Son of Neptune, led the rest of the Seven to victory many times, and is now a Praetor of the Twelfth Legion. He is stated to be one of the best praetors that legion has ever had.

  • Telumkinesis: As a son of Mars, he is an expert with all weapons and may have some magical control over them. He is shown to be a skilled archer, swordsman and spearman.
    • Archery: Frank's weapon of choice is a bow and arrow. Being the son of Mars, the war god, he is extremely accurate and masterful in shooting maybe even similarly skilled to the children of Apollo. Frank even managed to design different kinds of arrows for different functions. For example, his Hydra Arrows could string together enemies, tying them up or pinning them to walls. Hazel had even described Frank as the best archer she ever met.
    • Swordsmanship: Though he does not usually fight with a sword, Frank, being a son of the war god, is a very skilled swordsman, and defeats over 100 Katoblepones with Hazel's Spatha. He also picked up a Sword from a fallen monster, using it to destroy many monsters.
  • Fighting Skills: Being a son of Mars, Frank is a naturally skilled fighter even for a demigod. He defeated many of his Roman allies in the war games, defeated an army of monsters in the House of Hades, beaten the giant, Alcyoneus with Hazel's help, and destroyed over a hundred of Katoblepones single-handedly most of which he did with little prior experience. He has shown that he is a skilled swordsman, spearman, archer, and hand-to-hand combatant. When he and his friends was fighting off a horde of monsters, Piper had even described him as 'terrifying'.
  • Physically Enhanced: Being a son of Mars, Frank is stronger than an average mortal and even an average demigod. He is strong enough to tackle 3 heavily armed Roman soldiers. He had even knocked out a powerful giant by hitting him over the head with a shield, and broke a golden pilum over a demigod's head. After receiving the Blessing of Mars in The House of Hades however, Frank "unleashed a hurricane of violence" and destroyed over a hundred Katoblepones single-handedly. In addition, he became even stronger. Strong enough to slam a full grown god to the wall, even holding him in a chokehold without allowing him to break out. Out of the Seven, Frank is probably the most physically strong. He is also very tall and muscular as he is 6'5 or 6'6 ft tall.
    • Superhuman Durability: As a son of Mars, Frank is more durable than an average mortal.
    • Superhuman Agility: As a son of Mars, Frank is more agile than an average human.
  • Tactician: Frank has been shown to have great skill in battle planning and leadership. It is also the gift that Mars gave him.
  • Necromancy (limited): Frank can control dead ghosts and skeletons of ancient Roman Legionnaires, as shown towards the end of The House of Hades and spirits of the dead who lost a war though his power over them is still limited. Once Jason promotes him to the rank of Praetor, Frank is able to command an entire ghost Legion, summoned by Nico di Angelo from Diocletian's scepter. Still, Frank's powers over the dead are far inferior to Nico's.
  • Father's Voices: In The House of Hades, it is revealed that Ares' and Mars' voices have been constantly bickering and yelling inside of Frank's head ever since Leo started a civil war between both camps at the beginning of The Mark of Athena, though this is likely unintentional on Mars' part. Frank can somewhat control both voices, and even ask them for advice.
  • Blessing of Mars: Frank is enveloped by a red light that gives him invulnerability and superhuman strength, similar to the curse of Achilles. He has received it twice: in Venice and in the House of Hades.
  • Odikinesis (possibly): As a son of Mars, he presumably has some control over emotions of war such as fear, hatred or anger though he has not demonstrated this ability.

  • Shapeshifting: Frank has the limited ability to change into any animal he wishes, mythical or real although the animal can't be completely out of the ordinary such as an elephant mixed with a lion. However, this ability is easier to use during times of danger and battle or if he knows the animal well. The animal itself is also much stronger if Frank knows it well. Frank has so far turned into an elephant, an eagle, a grizzly bear, a weasel, a seal, a dragon, a crow, an iguana, a snake, a koi goldfish, a dolphin, a gorilla, a bulldog, a rhinoceros, a swarm of bees, and a lion. After receiving the Blessing of Mars, Frank's shape-shifting becomes more fluid and less tiring, as he could begin an attack in human form and finish as an animal.

  • Magical Item[]

    • Frank's Spear: A gift from the god Mars, before Frank left on his quest. The spear is tipped with a dragon tooth, allowing Frank to summon the spartus Gray. The spear however only had three charges so that Frank had enough time to learn his family gift. After the third charge was used, the spear vanished.
    • Arrows: Being a skilled archer, Frank managed to design different kinds of arrows for different functions. For example, his Hydra Arrows could string together enemies, tying them up or pinning them to walls. Frank also carries around Imperial Gold arrows in case of monster attacks.
    • Gorgon Blood: Before Percy used the vials of blood in a bet with Phineas, Frank carried around two bottles of Gorgon Blood, one of them healed while the other killed. Frank picked up the vials after Percy killed the Gorgons. While Frank wanted to use them to prevent his life stick from burning, Percy thought that he picked them up because he didn't want Percy to be seen carrying poison into Camp Jupiter.
    Franks Stick

    Frank’s Stick.

    • Burned Stick (formerly): Because Frank is too powerful, being the son of Mars and being a descendant of Poseidon, Frank's life is connected to a piece of fire wood. If the stick ever burns up, Frank will die. Frank gave the stick to Hazel Levesque as he was told giving it to someone he trusts could prolong his life. In The House of Hades, he asks Hazel for it back after Leo gave him his fire-proof bag. The stick burns with the fire of life, allowing Frank to melt the chains that held Death. By making it burn so to defeat Caligula, he took control of his destiny and became free of his curse.
    • Fire-proof bag: Made by Calypso at Leo's request. It was given to the son of Mars when Leo was reunited with the seven to keep his stick safe. The bag is small and white in color with a gold pull string, it is fire-proof and allows the stick to breath and can only open when he wishes so. Frank keeps it tied to his belt.
    • Frank's Bow: As Leo figures out, Frank's bow has a camouflage ability to turn into a backpack whenever Frank wills it to. He can actually hold things in the backpack and whenever his bow is in bow form, the possessions in the bag somehow disappear and reappear when he wills it into backpack form.
    • Gladius: During the War Games, Frank drew a gladius though reluctantly when he ran out of arrows.

    Relationships[]

    Love Interests[]

    Hazel Levesque[]

    Hazel Levesque

    Hazel Levesque, his girlfriend.

Frank and Hazel were good friends in The Son of Neptune, but both secretly had crushes on each other. Hazel's heart skipped a beat every time she saw Frank, which irritated her because the entire camp teased her and said she and Frank should date, because they were the two biggest losers at camp. However, Frank was the only one at Camp Jupiter who was nice to Hazel and didn't treat her like a disease, which Hazel was grateful for but thought if he knew about her past, he wouldn't be as nice to her. As for Frank, he really liked Hazel and thought she was nice and good-looking. He was very attracted to her and wanted to put his arms around her and make her warm, and thought she always looked good. Hazel was Frank's only friend and he even almost told her about his firewood secret. Frank also was grateful for Hazel when she stood for Percy Jackson. And at dinner, Frank bragged to Percy about Hazel got her first stripe, and made her sound like a hero.

Hazel and Frank later went on the quest to Alaska along with Percy. While on the boat, Frank attempted to help Hazel with her seasickness and got a saltine, but it snapped in his big fingers and crumbs went everywhere, making Hazel laugh. When Hazel got a blackout, Frank became very worried and panicked, and was relieved when she woke up. Frank was also worried that he never noticed her blackouts before and asked if it was for a medical reason, and held her hand, which surprised Hazel, but pleasantly. After Percy left to get food, Frank told Hazel that he realized she was born in a different time and was from the Underworld. Hazel wanted to cry, not because she was upset, but because she was relieved he wasn't treating her like a zombie. Frank reassured Hazel that she was alive now, and intended to keep her that way. Hazel said she didn't deserve a friend like him, and Frank said she was a great friend and not the only one who had secrets. Before Frank could explain, Hazel was dragged away by Karpoi. However, even after, even though Hazel was the one Frank trusted most, Frank hesitated to tell her, because he worried he wouldn’t want to take his burden.

As the quest went on, Hazel began seeing Frank as having more courage than she realized, and the one looking out for her, which was a nice change for Hazel, since usually she was the one looking out for Frank and keeping him out of trouble. Frank eventually encouraged Hazel to tell the story of her past, and that she shouldn’t carry her problems alone, but if she didn’t want to, it was okay. Hazel eventually told everything, except for Sammy, to Frank, Ella, and Percy, and Frank held her hand, saying that Hazel was brave and that he could never be as brave as Hazel. Hazel trusted Frank enough to pull him into one of her blackouts, and Frank saw where she went after death. As Frank and Hazel sat in the Fields of Asphodel, Frank said she deserved Elysium, and he was angry her life was taken away from her at such a young age. Frank finally told Hazel about his lifeline, and Hazel questioned why he would trust her, being a daughter of Pluto, but he insisted and said she was his best friend, and he trusted her. Frank and Hazel became more attracted to each other, and after Hazel rescued Arion, Frank said she was very incredible and Hazel wanted to kiss him right then and there. And when they were at Grandma Zhang’s house, Hazel made Frank his favorite breakfast, astonishing him that Hazel would do that for her. Later, Frank thanked Hazel for not hating him and making him breakfast, and Hazel confessed she was impressed when Frank summoned a skeleton the night before, shocking Frank. Frank was later slightly jealous when Hazel gave Percy a sisterly kiss on the way to Anchorage. But finally, after Frank defeated Alcyoneus, Hazel gave him a kiss on the lips, starting their relationship. Hazel also began carrying Frank’s firewood.

In The Mark of Athena, Frank and Hazel’s relationship became a little strained, due to Leo Valdez being on the ship, and being attracted to Hazel. Frank was skeptical of Leo due to looking like Sammy, and scowled when Hazel went off with Leo on Arion. Frank and Leo would keep showing off to impress Hazel the next day in Kansas, and before Frank could insult Leo, Hazel stepped in and promised to help Frank scout for Roman Eagles. and Frank became furious at Leo when he and Hazel stood holding hands for awhile, because Frank thought he had feelings for Hazel. However, Frank and Hazel still cared about each other, and Frank promised to rescue Nico di Angelo for Hazel's sake, and became furious at Jason and Leo when they were suspicious of him. Frank wanted to go comfort Hazel right away but Piper told Frank to wait a few minutes so she could cool off. Hazel also tried not to laugh when Frank couldn’t get the Chinese finger trap off of him. Hazel would also talk to Leo and tell him that his fire made Frank nervous. The strain in their relationship ended after Hazel and Frank went to Rome with Leo, and Frank and Leo's relationship mended.

In The House of Hades, Frank and Hazel are as close as ever, and Frank was grateful for Hazel when she offered to go with him to Venice so he wouldn't be alone with Nico. Frank was also very angry when Hazel was poisoned and threatened Triptolemus to heal her. Frank was determined to kill the Katobleps to heal her, and when she woke up, Frank tackled her in a hug. When Frank’s appearance changed after getting the Blessing of Mars, Hazel said he looked amazing, but when Hazel kissed Frank, she had a sad look in her eyes. Hazel worries that Frank's personality would change, but after a few days, she realized he was the same old Frank she knew and loved, and was in awe and impressed after he defeated the katobleps in Venice. Hazel also wished that Frank was with her instead of Jason when defeating Sciron. Later, after they went through the House of Hades, Frank ran and hugged her. They were both worried about each other’s injuries but were both grateful to be alive. Hazel also tried to hug Frank when she found out he was praetor, but she couldn’t due to her broken ribs. Hazel also trusted Frank enough to tell him that she knew that Leo was in love with a girl.

In The Blood of Olympus, Hazel and Frank were very close and reminded Leo of an old married couple. Frank would sometimes put his hand over Hazel’s, which Hazel recently had stopped getting flustered at. Hazel and Frank went to most places together. Frank and Hazel both cried together with Frank's arm around hers as they told the others about Leo’s death. During Hazel's last night at Camp Half-Blood, Frank visited Hazel and they talked to each other in hushed tones. When Nico subtly threatened Frank, Hazel laced her hand in his, making Nico's heart ache at his comfortable they looked together. Hazel kissed him and said she would see him in the morning before he left the cabin.

In The Tyrant's Tomb, we see that Hazel is worried about Frank having a death wish and wanted him to be safe. When Apollo and her are eating lunch, she's distracted and mumbles to herself about liking a guy with a death wish. She then tells Apollo how by talking to Frank he washed away her curse, which she sounded grateful for. Before Hazel goes on the quest with Apollo, she has a talk with Frank out of earshot. Lavinia says that they would be there for a while, because when those two start mother henning over each other, it could take awhile. Lavinia claims that if they could wrap each other in Styrofoam peanuts, they would. When everyone thinks that Frank died, Hazel is in another part of town, and doesn't know. When Apollo tells her after they kill a legion of zombies, she leans on Arion and cries, but has to quickly compose herself. She sends Arion to go find Frank's body and goes to fight Tarquin. After the battle. Hazel is scolding Lavinia about leaving her post when she sees Arion with a figure draped across his back. It's Frank. They rush him to the medics and it is shown that Frank is healthy. Hazel and Apollo are by his side when he wakes up. Hazel hugs him and cries. She proceeds to tell him how he scared her and gives him some nectar. She kisses him on the forehead and tells him he broke her heart. Fast-forward to the end. Hazel and Frank meet Apollo in a coffee shop before they have to rouse the legion. They leave hand in hand.

In The Tower of Nero, the two work on rebuilding New Rome together and are the most efficient and respected pair of praetors to ever run the Twelfth Legion. The two also enjoy the fact that Hazel's curse appears to officially be broken and she can use her powers to create gold and jewels without any trouble.

    Friends[]

    Annabeth Chase-Viria

    Annabeth, a good friend.

Frank first learned about Annabeth in The Son of Neptune but they first formally met in The Mark of Athena. Annabeth thought that Frank was cute like an oversized cuddly panda bear and fought down a twinge of jealousy when she realized he was already close to Percy, and was suspicious when he and Hazel were hiding a prophecy concerning her from the camp. As for Frank, he was very amazed when he found out she was a daughter of Athena and looked at her as if she grew a third eye. Annabeth was also amazed when she found out that Frank could shapeshift. Annabeth quickly befriended Frank and trusted him to watch Leo after only knowing him for a few seconds. After Annabeth listened how Frank turned into a koi, she couldn't look at him the same again without thinking of him as a koi. Annabeth also told Leo to knock it off after he insulted Frank, when he said that he’s worth at least two or three Franks.

When the Argo II arrived in Charleston, Frank went to Annabeth's cabin and asked her to help him take of Chinese handcuffs, showing that Frank trusted Annabeth not to make fun of him. Annabeth was pleasantly surprised by the visit, thinking he was the least likely to come visit her, and she felt honored-she had a soft spot for people seeking knowledge and liked that he trusted her. Annabeth also knew that Frank was embarrassed after Leo kept teasing him, and she knew he didn't want to be a laughingstock. Frank was impressed when Annabeth pulled up a 3D model of Chinese handcuffs, and Annabeth explained to him how to escape them. Annabeth also reassured Frank that Leo didn’t intend to be mean to him, and that he just gets nervous about Frank due to his size and powers, and that deep down, he's a good person. Frank almost told Annabeth about his lifeline, but the dinner bell rang. Annabeth noted that Frank made her feel warm and fuzzy, like hot chocolate, and she could see how Hazel liked him. During their talk, Frank told Annabeth to "Keep it Simple" and Annabeth used that advice to help defeat Arachne, and so did the 3D model she made for Frank.

After Annabeth fell into Tartarus, Frank felt very guilty and said he wished he was paying attention, on the verge of tears. In The House of Hades, when Annabeth was gone, Frank missed her very much. Even though Mars screamed in his head to not trust her, Frank trusted Annabeth and thought she was kind, patient and helpful, even when he was distracted and acted like a buffoon. After Frank rescued Percy and Annabeth, he asked them what happened in Tartarus, and they said they would tell him, not not now, they weren't ready.

In The Blood of Olympus, Frank and Annabeth were very close and collaborated with each other as the leaders of the Argo II. Annabeth and Frank discussed who should go on the quest to capture Nike and Annabeth agreed with Frank that four demigods should go: 2 Greek, 2 Roman, and exchanged war godly looks. They also agreed that they shouldn't go together on the quest because their godly parents are rivals. And when Frank and the others arrived at Camp Half-Blood, Frank shapeshifted into a dragon and carried Annabeth in one claw. Due to Leo's insistence, Frank kept Leo’s suicidal plan from Annabeth. When Frank told her, Annabeth was very angry at first, but couldn't stay angry while Frank was crying and agreed that’s a plan Leo would’ve done. Frank and Reyna also told Annabeth that after she graduated from high school, she and Percy could go to New Rome University and then live out the rest of their lives in New Rome. Annabeth and Frank kept in contact, meeting for monthly Argo II reunion parties.

    Nico di Angelo

Nico di Angelo, his ally and friend.

Frank and Nico met before the events of The Son of Neptune. Frank is not uneasy around Nico like the other kids at Camp Jupiter. Frank thinks that Nico is okay, though thinks he is mysterious and doesn't think he is as nice or as good looking as Hazel. Frank didn't know much about him though, or about his past. Frank even thought his father was cool, and knew it wasn't his fault that he ran the underworld. On Nico's end, Nico was amused by the son of Mars and smiled when he saw him, since he wasn't nervous around him like the others. Nico also explained to Frank that death was captured in the senate meeting.

In The Mark of Athena, Frank wanted to save Nico from the bronze jar and was worried about how long he would survive in the jar. He was extremely angry at Jason and Leo for not wanting to, and lashed out at them. Frank, along with Leo and Hazel, helped track down Nico and was determined to save him. After he was rescued, Nico thanked everyone, including Frank, saying he had almost lost hope. Nico later reassured Frank that Percy and Annabeth falling into Tartarus wasn't his fault.

In The House of Hades, it is revealed that Frank is secretly scared of going to places alone with Nico, and thought he was quiet and ghostlike, and felt like he was from the past. Frank thought he seemed to dematerialize when he wasn't speaking, and didn't know what scared him more: Hordes of reckless ghosts, cow monsters, or being alone with Nico. Frank couldn't think of him being kind to anyone, other than Hazel, and wondered why he helped everyone if he hated Percy so much. He was even always scared of Nico. Frank was relived when Hazel went with them to Venice so he didn't have to be alone with Nico. But Frank still tried to be his friend and encouraged him to talk about his past and his childhood in Venice. Frank was angry at Nico and wanted to kill him after Hazel was poisoned, and wanted to strangle him. His anger subsided when it was revealed that he used to play Mythomagic too, however. And when he was turned into a plant by Triptolemus, he demanded that he be turned back, calling him "his friend", and slammed the minor god into a wall for not healing Hazel or Nico faster. Later, Nico called Frank brave for killing all of the Katobleps in Venice, but became shocked when he found out he actually killed all of them.

Frank was worried about Nico after he became quieter after the incident, mentioning to Hazel that he doesn't think he plays well with others. Hazel thanked Frank for trying to be his friend, since he isn't easy to like, and Frank said he is used to people who aren't easy to like after being with his grandmother for years. Later, Frank trusted Nico to guide him into the house of hades. Nico and Frank fought off hordes of monsters together in the House of Hades, and it was because of Nico that Frank was promoted to Praetor, when Nico encouraged Jason to promote him. Nico even smiled and laughed when Frank commanded the ghosts and killed the ghosts, saying "That’s more like it! Let’s turn this tide!" The two collaborated well, with Nico summoning the ghosts and Frank commanding them. Nico later told Frank he had an arrow in his arm.

In The Blood of Olympus, Nico regarded Frank as one of his friends, not overlooking him like others, and when he found out he may die, he felt like he was back in the Bronze Jar again. Later, when he was back at Camp Half-Blood, Nico was the only person not angry at Frank for aiding Leo in his suicidal plan, since he knew that was exactly what Leo would've done. Frank visited Nico and Hazel in their cabin, and thanked Nico. Nico said Frank did great, and it was an honor to quest with him. He thought that it was a good sign he could talk openly about his lifeline. Nico told Frank that he wasn't close to death and he had many more adventures ahead of him. He told him to be good to Hazel, and that he was a good guy, though secretly jealous of his happy relationship. Frank asked Nico if he wanted to come to Camp Jupiter with them, and that he would always have a place in New Rome but Nico said he would stay at Camp, and that he would visit. Frank said he’d hope he'd see him again, and Nico promised to be flower boy at his wedding. Frank was flustered after he said that, and left. Hazel then chastised Nico for teasing him about that.

In The Hidden Oracle, Nico says that he doesn't see Frank often, since he's busy with the whole "Twelfth Legion Thing".

    Jason Grace-Viria

    Jason, his friend.

Frank and Jason first met in The Mark of Athena, and when Jason heard how Frank heard how he killed Alcyoneus, Jason questioned how he killed Alcyoneus without the help of a god, and Frank said he did by pushing him into Canada. Frank became very mad at Jason when he was opposed to rescuing Nico di Angelo, but was more angry at Leo than Jason. Later, Jason wanted Frank to come with him to find a map in Charleston, because he was a son of Mars, and ghosts are bound to serve him. Frank and Jason cooperated well and they both flew in the sky and flew to Fort Sumter, helping defeat the Romans.

In The House of Hades, Frank and Jason had become good friends, and Frank was in awe of Jason and respected him as the leader of the Argo II. Jason reassured Frank they wouldn’t be in Croatia for long, since Frank complained that Percy and Annabeth needed to be rescued. While Jason went to Dalmatia, he trusted Frank enough to make him in charge of defending the ship. Frank also listened to Jason when he ordered him to go get Coach Hedge, and when he did, Jason gave Frank an appreciative nod. When the ghosts didn’t listen to Jason when Nico summoned them in the House of Hades, Frank realized that Jason wasn’t quite Roman anymore and his time at Camp Half-Blood had changed him, and he tried to make the ghosts listen to him. When they slightly listened to him, Jason was amazed as to how they did, and Frank said they didn’t recognize Jason as a Roman officer anymore. Jason ended up promoting Frank to Praetor so the ghosts could listen to him, respecting him as a leader. Jason also listened to Frank when he ordered him to move legionnaires across the pit. After it was over, Jason calmly told Frank he was on fire. Jason later told Reyna that she should’ve seen Frank fight, showing that he was impressed by the son of Mars. That night, Jason spoke to Frank in hushed tones, telling him advice on being praetor.

In The Blood of Olympus, Jason respected Frank as the co-leader of the Argo II and obeyed his orders. Jason and Frank also lead a backup charge into the Parthenon to defeat the Gigantes. When Jason found out about Frank not revealing Leo’s suicidal plan to him, Jason was originally angry at him, but he calmed down because he couldn’t be mad while Frank was crying, and admitted it was a plan that Leo would’ve done. Frank and Jason kept in contact with each other, meeting for monthly Argo II reunion parties.

In The Tyrant's Tomb, Frank was very saddened when he found out about Jason’s death, and was trying not to burst into tears around the legion. He promised to make Jason’s dream of honoring all of the gods a reality before his funeral. He couldn’t even say Jason’s name without almost bursting into tears. Frank attended and led Jason’s funeral, and started the funeral feast. Frank eventually tried to sacrifice himself to save Camp Jupiter and avenge Jason’s death, and destroyed his firewood, saying “This is for Jason.” In The Tower of Nero, Hazel and Frank kept going with Jason’s temple expansion plan, building more temples every week.

    Leo Valdez-Viria

Leo, his friend and former rival.

Frank and Leo met in The Mark of Athena and had a rocky start. While Frank watched Leo once they got back on the Argo II, Frank was skeptical of him and asked if his name was Sammy, which confused Leo. However, Leo was grateful for Frank for not hating him, despite him firing on Camp Jupiter after he suggested Octavian may have done it. Leo also introduced Frank to Festus. At first, Frank didn't trust Leo and scowled when he said he wanted to go with Hazel to retrieve lime for ship repairs, which only motivated Leo even more to prove that he was trustworthy. Throughout the earlier stages of their acquaintance, Leo and Frank got into numerous small arguments. One of such is when Leo asked Frank why he didn't always turn into a dragon, since it was such a useful form to take the shape of. Frank replied, saying it was because shapeshifting is hard, like lifting weights. Leo said he wouldn't know, since he didn't lift weights, to which Frank began to respond, telling him he should consider trying it out. Shortly after, Hazel stepped in to cut off the argument. Frank also got angry at Leo when he didn't want to rescue Nico, taking it as a sign that Leo was skeptical of both Hazel and Nico's loyalty. In Atlanta, Leo embarrassed Frank when he teased him for not figuring out Chinese handcuffs, and he said he was worth at least two or three Franks when he and other members of the Argo II were wondering how much each of them would be worth. Annabeth later reassured Frank that Leo was nervous around him, and he was a good guy. Hazel also told Leo that Frank was nervous around him due to his fireballs, since Frank's main weakness is fire, due to his fragile lifeline depending on a piece of firewood.

They got into a fight in the Atlantic when Frank was reluctant to leave Leo alone with Hazel. When Coach Hedge said that Leo and Hazel were holding hands, Frank freaked out and was furious at Leo. While Leo and Hazel were talking about her past together in a shared memory, Leo awakens to find out that the ship as been attacked. After he and Frank fall overboard, they wake up in a cave underwater. Frank wasn't happy that he was stuck with Leo, and told Leo he obviously cared more about this ship than his friends due to his carelessness. Leo realized that Frank was angry about him holding hands with Hazel, and apologized, saying they were in a blackout in order to find his connection with Sammy. Frank became curious, and Leo said that he was Sammy's great great grandson, telling Frank the whole story in the process. Leo also told Frank that he was not trying to date Hazel, even though his feelings were complicated. They both decided to make a plan to get out of the cave since Frank couldn't shapeshift, and Leo tried to free them with fire, making Frank freak out. Leo soon realized that Frank had a bad experience with fire in the past, just like him. In order to ensure Frank that he wasn't alone in his bad relationship with fire, he told him how his mom died. Frank almost told him about his lifeline until Bythos interrupted.

Frank and Leo's relationship was better after that, but still rocky. When Hazel wanted Leo to go with Frank and Hazel in Rome, Frank's smile looked like Chrysaor's mask. While in Rome, Leo insulted Frank by saying he needed to be skinnier to get through a hole in a wall. Leo and Frank also argued about what Frank should shapeshift into until Hazel told them to stop. When the two were alone, Frank said that Hazel said that Leo knew about his lifeline, and Leo reassured him that he wouldn't do anything to hurt him. Frank told Leo about his grandmother and the fire, and how his mom died, making Leo realize they both lost their moms to a fire. Leo told Frank the whole story about how his mom died, and Frank said even though he hates when people say "I'm sorry about your mom", he said that to Leo, and he accepted it. Leo reassured Frank that they all have weaknesses, with Leo being tragically funny and good looking, and they both agreed to look for Hazel. Leo ended up using his fortune cookie from Nemesis to save Frank and Hazel. When they returned to the Argo II, Leo thought it was cool that Frank knew Chinese, and said he was amazing.

In The House of Hades, Frank and Leo were friends, but still had a rocky relationship. Frank mentioned how his aunt and Leo's grandma would get along, and Leo felt bad that he missed Canada day, and asked Frank if he should have gotten him a present. As for Frank, he revealed that in his head, Ares and Mars told him to kill Leo, and Ares told him to retaliate to every insult he gave him, since he teased him a lot. Leo's comment that he made in Atlanta about Leo being worth two or three Frank's hit too close to home for him, and it hurt his feelings. Leo also has a tendency to annoy Frank a lot with his stupid jokes, and when Leo made a pun about the town of Split, Frank groaned and asked Jason to leave him in Croatia. The two sometimes agreed with each other, like when they both thought there were too many monsters in Croatia. Frank also wanted to be there for all of his friends, including Leo, since Annabeth was gone.

After Leo returned from Ogygia, Frank was happy to see him and patted him on the back so hard he winced. Frank realized that Leo had changed since Ogygia, and that he didn’t tease Frank much or steal glances at Hazel. Frank was amazed how Leo's tension with Hazel had disappeared. Frank was relieved that Leo wasn't hitting on her, but he was worried about him, even after their differences, and after all they'd been through, he didn't want his heart broken. Leo later asked Frank for his firewood, and though Frank was reluctant, he gave it to him, and trusted Leo. Leo ended up making a fireproof bag for Frank's firewood, and Leo wanted to light it to test it. Even though Frank was skeptical, he realized he trusted Leo after he saved him in Rome. The bag ended up being fireproof, and Frank was grateful to Leo and thanked him, even though it seemed inadequate after what he had done for him. Leo accepted it and said he was his best buddy. Later, Leo told Hazel he was happy for her and Frank, and hoped they would be happy. Leo also said Frank had moves and would be alright. Leo was happy that Frank was promoted to Praetor, and clapped him on the shoulder, saying he can order Octavian to fall on his sword.

By The Blood of Olympus, Leo and Frank were close friends. Leo was supportive of his relationship with Hazel and thought they were cute together, reminding him of an old married couple. Leo couldn't believe how much Frank had changed in the last few weeks, and thought he was more confident and more willing to take charge. He could barely see him as the the klutzy dude who couldn't get out of Chinese handcuffs just a few weeks ago. Leo and Frank went with Percy and Hazel to defeat Nike in Olympia, and he was grateful when he came back so he wouldn't have to talk to Percy. Frank was slightly offended when Leo didn't know who Pelops was, but more in a teasing way.

Later, when they went to Delos, Frank went with Leo and Hazel, at Leo's insistence. After they met with Apollo and Artemis, they both told each other about what they heard. Leo then revealed to Hazel and Frank how he was planning to sacrifice himself to save everyone, and survive by taking the Physician's Cure. Frank was shocked, but Leo told them he told them because they are Romans, and they knew a lot about sacrifice. Frank choked up, and Leo said he was counting on him, and that since his father told him to step up, he would have to make the call other people aren't willing to make. Frank cried and hugged both Leo and Hazel, which Leo was weirded out by. Leo asked if he was in agreement, and Frank said he hated the plan, but he would do it. The next day, Frank gave Leo the Pylosian Mint and told him not to break it. Leo joked about how not breaking deadly poison would've never occurred to him, and Frank told him to shut up and gave him a hug, telling him to be careful. Frank kept Leo's plan from the others at his insistence. After Leo died, Frank was devastated and cried, tearfully telling the others. They were all mad at Frank until they couldn't be mad at him while he was crying, and they agreed that was a plan Leo would've done.

In The Hidden Oracle, Leo expressed interest of seeing Frank again. In The Dark Prophecy, after Leo found out that Camp Jupiter would be attacked, he flew on Festus to Camp Jupiter to warn him and the camp. Everyone, including Frank, got in a line and punched him, then Leo helped them prepare for the battle. In The Tyrant's Tomb, Frank was grateful that Leo came and told Apollo they would've lost the battle if not for him. Frank said he was mad at him for making him worry about him, but was happy to see him. As for Leo, he was glad Frank was okay.

    Piper McLean

    Piper, his good friend

Frank and Piper met in The Mark of Athena. Frank and Piper seemed to have befriended each other and Piper wondered what Frank thought of Camp Half-Blood, if it seemed alien to him, if it made him miss Camp Jupiter, or if it made him be unfair about the lack of acknowledging the Romans. Piper could also tell that there was tension between Frank, Leo, and Hazel. Frank also agreed with Piper that he wasn’t sure if Reyna could stop Octavian. Frank later became slightly miffed at Piper when she told him to wait to comfort Hazel, because she says she needed time to cool off, making Frank huff like an irritated bear. However, Piper greatly cared about Frank in a short amount of time, and when he got missing, she stared in Katoptris for hours trying to locate him, and didn’t sleep that night. When she found him the next morning, she cried with relief and jumped in the water. Piper also reassured Frank that it wasn’t his fault that Percy and Annabeth fell into Tartarus.

In The House of Hades, Frank tried to be there for all of his remaining friends, including Piper, since Annabeth was gone. Frank also would forget that Piper’s father was Tristan McLean, and thought she was down to earth for a daughter of a movie star, which was fine with Frank, since he didn’t want paparazzi taking pictures of his epic fails. Frank was also curious as to why Piper wasn’t great with cows, but decided not to ask. Piper also thought that all of the boys, including Frank, had gross habits and complained about them to Hazel, due to being the only girls on the ship. Piper and Frank cooperated well in the House of Hades, and agreed that they both didn’t like cows. Piper also listened to Frank when he told her to distract the female Empousa. When they were done, Piper was in awe of Frank, and called him terrifying, but amazing, and helped bandage his wound. Piper also bragged how amazing he was to Reyna.

In The Blood of Olympus, Piper respected Frank as the co-leader of the Argo II, along with Annabeth. The two did some bonding when they went to Pylos to get the Pylosian Mint. Before they met his ancestors, Piper took Frank shopping to buy some new clothes and reassured him that he didn’t have to buy baggy clothes to hide his bulkiness anymore, and said he hadn’t changed, he was just more himself. They also killed giant warthogs together. Piper waited for Frank while he met with his ancestors and when he came out, Frank confided to Piper how they acted cold and distant around him because he was Chinese and a son of Mars. Piper told him that his cousins were idiots and they didn’t know how great he was. When they went back to the ship, Frank said it was nice killing warthogs with her and Piper agreed, and gave him a hug, which seemed to fluster him. Piper revealed that she couldn’t help liking Frank, since he was a kind and considerate boyfriend to Hazel and he had shouldered the title of Praetor, taking that responsibly off of Jason.

At Leo’s insistence, Frank kept Leo’s suicidal plan from Piper. When Piper found out, Piper was angry at Frank, but her anger subsided because she couldn’t be angry while Frank was crying, and she agreed that that is a plan Leo would’ve done. After Frank left Camp, Piper missed him, feeling like Camp was empty without him and the other Romans. The two kept in contact, meeting for monthly Argo II reunion parties.

    Reyna Viria

Reyna, Frank’s good friend and former co-praetor

Frank first met Reyna when he asked to be let into the camp, and apologized for the actions of his ancestor, Shen Lun, for starting the San Francisco earthquake. Reyna forgived it and let him join the legion, and told him that she judged people by their own merits. But he had him keep his past a secret between them, or he'll be treated badly. In The Son of Neptune, Reyna is very strict to Frank, reminding him that he is on Probatio, not letting him tell her about what happened when Percy came and not letting him stand for Percy. Frank was very insecure of what Reyna thought of him and he thought that she regretted her decision of letting him join the legion. When Percy asked Reyna if Frank could be praetor, Reyna rejected the notion and said that even though Frank had a good heart, he was hopelessly naive and inexperienced, and he would be rejected if they knew his family history. However, after Mars appeared during the war games and claimed Frank, and ordered Reyna to give Frank the mural crown, Reyna reluctantly promoted him to Centurion and accepted his choice of companions, due to her fear and respect of his father.

In The House of Hades, Frank was in disbelief that Reyna would try to find the Argo II in the ocean, because she’d be stripped off her praetorship. When Reyna arrived at the Argo II, Frank was uneasy around Reyna, and skeptical about having his boss over for lunch. When Reyna found out Frank was promoted to praetor, she was shocked and skeptical, since he led a legion of ghosts, but after quick convincing, she approved, surprising Frank. She said that a son of Mars who brought back the eagle from Alaska would be a perfect praetor and thinks he is the right person for her to command the Twelfth Legion Fulminata with him. She even called him a hero and smiled at him. But they both wondered how they would convince the legion. Frank reassured Reyna that the legion would listen to her after age made it across the ancient lands, but after Reyna said she broke the laws of the legion, Frank complimented her, saying good leaders gave to do great things sometimes. They both agree that they should catapult Octavian into the ocean once they returned to command after Frank suggested it. After Frank suggested that he could go with Reyna to Camp Half-Blood, Reyna refused, saying that she hoped they would work side by side in the future, but he is one of the Seven in the prophecy and he belonged on the ship with his friends.

In The Blood of Olympus, Frank and Reyna greeted each other when they arrived back at Camp and led the legion to defeat Gaea. They both worked together to help the two Camps get along and made funeral arrangements, and also agreed to have Percy and Annabeth attend college in New Rome. On the last day of them at Camp, they spoke to both Greeks and Romans in front of the campfire, and Frank said both she and Reyna agreed that there would be a new period of friendship between the camps, and Reyna clapped Frank on the back, saying he was right.

Frank and Reyna worked together well as praetors and got along very well. In Camp Jupiter Classified: A Probatio's Journal, Frank and Reyna help break up a fight and clean up dead rats in the Bathhouse, and they also investigate who the culprit of the coliseum flooding is, and the missing Ambrosia and Nectar. The two think that Claudia is the culprit for everything, and Frank talks Reyna out of calling Claudia to the Senate House right away, showing that Reyna is willing to cooperate with him. Frank also confided in Reyna about how Claudia giggled when she saw him, thinking she was talking had about him. She is also not against putting Frank in danger for the sake of the camp, as he sends him with Claudia, Blaise, and Janice to stop Mimi.

In The Tyrant's Tomb, the two are together most of the time and close friends, greeting Apollo and Meg McCaffrey when they arrive at camp, organizing a funeral for Jason Grace, complete his plans for Temple Hill, and they approve a quest to go find Tarquin's Tomb. They have even worked out a schedule where while one praetor sleeps, the other is awake. Frank and Reyna are very supportive of each other and they help Meg and Apollo find the soundless god. Reyna complimented Frank at one point when he said a good point, saying he was studying the praetors handbook. As for Frank, he showed a lot of worry about Reyna and was concerned about how she shouldered the burdens of leadership, and wanted to relieve her. Frank also reassures Reyna that he will be able to handle things at camp himself to prepare for the battle, and though Reyna is hesitant on leaving her colleague alone, even though she knew he could do it, he said he could do it alone, relieving Reyna on her burdens of leadership. Before she left, Frank gave her a bear hug and told her to be careful, and Reyna was unsure what do about his show of affection, and her arms went stiff before she awkwardly patted him on the back, and wished him good luck too. Reyna was worried about Frank, reminding her of things he needed to do before he left, but she stopped herself and apologized, making Frank grin.

Reyna later contacted him while driving back to camp and finds him in the Caldecott Tunnel, and she was relieved when Frank picked up. However, the connection was bad and the scroll blew up. Reyna was confused as to what he was doing in the tunnel, and became very worried about him. Frank later wholeheartedly supported Reyna's decision to join the Hunters of Artemis and after she joined, Frank said he could thank Reyna all day long. He said she was the best mentor and friend, she gave so much to the legion, and can never be replaced. Frank wished Reyna the best on her new adventures.

    Gleeson Hedge

Coach Hedge, a Satyr he quested with

Coach Hedge and Frank meet in The Mark of Athena, and are on good terms, and respects him as a leader and a satyr, not a faun. Coach Hedge also cares for Frank, and rescued him and Percy from Phorcys in Atlanta.

However, in The House of Hades, Frank learns more about the satyr. Even though Hedge called Frank a nosy Roman, and pretends to not want to open up, Hedge willingly told Frank things he never told the others. Hedge told Frank about his marriage to Mellie, Mellie’s pregnancy, and taking Clarisse to Camp Half-Blood. Coach Hedge spoke about his fears of Mellie dying like his mother, and Frank reassured him that he is doing what he needs to do. Later, Frank encouraged Hedge to go with Reyna and Nico to bring the Athena Parthenos back to camp, because he knows he wants to see Mellie as soon as possible.

    Ellaviria

Ella, Frank’s friend and girlfriend of his distant relative

Ella and Frank first meet when he meets Phineas. Frank is outraged when she finds out how Phineas mistreated her and promises to save her. Frank comforted Ella when she got scared or irritated, even though Frank is confused about what she says sometimes. Ella warms up to Frank and even calls him a friend, and agrees to go with them. After Frank and Hazel Levesque have a blackout, Ella tells them that they will have no more blackouts.

Ella later comes to rescue Frank, Hazel, and Percy Jackson from the Amazons and goes with them to Canada and meets Grandma Zhang. Ella also helps defend the trio from ogres and tells Frank they are on the roof. Ella also tells Frank the prophecy about the Son of Neptune drowning. Frank made sure to protect Ella. During The Mark of Athena, Ella spouts lines from a prophecy from the Sibylline Books which makes Frank angry, because it made Octavian want to capture her. Frank still greatly cares about her though, and tries to protect her, pretending that she was saying nonsense. In The Tyrant's Tomb, Ella helps Frank decipher the prophecy about Tarquin’s Tomb. Frank later tells Apollo and Hazel that Ella told him how to kill Caligula. Ella is also relieved when she learns that Frank is alive.

Ella and Frank care about each other and see each other as friends, even if Ella confuses Frank. Ella may have had a crush on Frank, but she probably doesn’t anymore because she is dating Tyson.

    Claudia LoM

    Claudia, Franks subordinate

Frank meets Claudia in Camp Jupiter Classified: A Probatio's Journal, when Claudia bumps into him at the Temple of Mars. Claudia laughs at him because he reminded her about how ridiculous the temple was, but Frank becomes suspicious when he sees it. Later, Claudia overhears Frank and Reyna Ramírez-Arellano suspecting that Claudia is the culprit behind all of the mysterious happenings at Camp Jupiter. However, due to the lack of proof, Frank decides to not blame her right away.

Later, when Frank, Reyna, Aurum, and Argentum interrogate Claudia, Claudia explains what happened, embarrassing Frank since he didn’t know the legends she was talking about before. Frank agrees to help her and her friends to find the ancle and defeat Mimi, but when he shapeshifts into an eagle, he falls into a trash can and breaks his wing.

Claudia respects Franks position as praetor and describes him as “solid”. Frank also respects Claudia and is willing to help her.

    Lester Viria

    Apollo, Frank’s friend and mentor

At first, Frank admired Apollo and prayed to him, wishing that he was his father. Apollo thought that the son of Mars was adorable, like a teddy bear, and pitied him. However, when Frank lost his baby fat abs became a capable warrior, Apollo began to respect him and thought that he was a good fighter.

The two have a formal introduction in The Tyrant's Tomb, when they greet each other at the beginning of the camp, and Frank agrees to have Apollo stay at Camp Jupiter. After Apollo sleeps for a day and a half and wakes up, Frank is there to greet him and knows about the prophecy because Meg McCaffrey told him. Frank and Apollo go to New Rome to talk to Tyson and Ella, and a Frank tells Apollo about the casualties in the battle and Leo’s visit. That same day, Apollo and Frank walk together with Hannibal and he tells him that he has accepted his life being tied to a piece of wood.

At the Battle of San Francisco Bay, Frank greets Apollo and Meg at the Caldecott Tunnel and tells him what’s happening in the battle. Frank challenges Caligula to a fight to the death, worrying Apollo which causes him to join the fight. However, Frank tells him that he is ruining his plan. They lure Commodus and Caligula in the tunnel and they both fight them. Frank then hugs Caligula and tells Apollo to run, and blows himself up. Apollo is heartbroken by this and keeps yelling for Frank’s name, but accepts he is dead and blames himself for it. Apollo is overjoyed when Frank lives, and sits at his bedside with Hazel Levesque. He says goodbye to Apollo and Meg in the morning.

    Family[]

    Mars GN

    Mars, his father.

As seen in The Son of Neptune, Frank's relationship with his father is a complicated one. Mars obviously cares about him, and feels immense pride in his son, though Frank is somewhat put off by his father, both for his boasting of Frank and his skill and for Mars being the god of War since Frank lost his mother to war. However, Frank slowly comes to accept that he is the son of the war god, and is given not only a spartus summoning spear, but even his mother's favorite book: The Art of War, by Sun Tzu. Mars encourages his son to use his mind in a battle rather than pure guts, and warns Frank of his role in an ultimate choice Percy must make. In The House of Hades, it is revealed that Ares' and Mars' voices have been constantly bickering and yelling inside of Frank's head. Later, when Frank challenges over a hundred Katoblepones, Mars grants him his Blessing. Mars was so extremely proud of Frank's victory over the monsters, that he not only granted him his wish of a serpent, but even gave Frank a more powerful and handsome build, and his Greek and Roman forms were momentarily united. In The Blood of Olympus, Frank and Ares defeat quite a few Giants together in Athens, and the choice that his father had told him about finally comes to light, with Frank successfully making it, greatly contributing to Gaea's final defeat, which would have otherwise been impossible.

Frank loved his mother very much, and she loved him. After she died in the war, he was shattered. He is shown to care about her a lot.

Although Grandma Zhang seems quite harsh in The Son of Neptune, she really does love and care about Frank, and Frank cares about her. He was very worried for her safety when her house was surrounded.

    Percy Jackson

Percy Jackson, his distant relative and close friend.

As seen in The Son of Neptune, Percy and Frank have a very brotherly relationship, and Frank felt comfortable telling Percy about his mother's death. Percy, on his part, admired Frank's great courage and states that he is proud to be related to him. They are both related through Periclymenus, though Percy would be Frank's "great a thousand times" uncle. When Percy tries to explain this to Tyson, he caves and says that Frank is his brother because Tyson doesn't quite understand exactly how they are related. Throughout The Son of Neptune, Percy and Frank remain good friends, and Percy is constantly supporting Frank and making him feel better about himself, claiming that the latter is the first decent son of the god of war that he'd ever meet.

Frank is devastated when both Percy and Annabeth fall into Tartarus at the end of The Mark of Athena, and agrees to follow Nico's lead to the Necromanteion to save them.

In The Blood of Olympus, at Leo's insistence, Frank doesn't reveal the former's suicidal plan to Percy. After Leo's death, Frank breaks down crying and reveals the truth to Percy, who initially looks furious, but his rage quickly dissipates by the time Frank is done explaining, since he admits that staying mad at him was hard when Frank was crying, and the plan sounded like the exact thing that Leo would have done. Frank, Hazel, and Reyna let Percy and Annabeth know that they can live in New Rome as long as they'd like after completing their senior year of high school.

    Tyson-RR

Tyson, his distant relative and friend.

Tyson and Frank have a short lived relationship in The Son of Neptune, but Tyson likes Frank and calls him his brother, giving him a bear hug after learning that they're related. Frank, on his part, seems to care about Tyson too, as he asked the Cyclops if he is a fighter, not wanting his new friend to get hurt. At the end of The Blood of Olympus, after Gaea's defeat, Tyson departs to Camp Jupiter, along with Frank, Reyna, and his girlfriend Ella.

    Etymology[]

    • Frank is a name derived from a spear that was used by a Germanic people of the same name.
    • Zhāng (張/张) comes from the Chinese word for "to stretch (a bowstring)", and by extension, it can also mean "bow-maker" or "master of bows". According to history, the name was given by the Emperor to the men who had invented the bow, who then passed the name through the Zhang family. It is one of the most common Chinese surnames and can also be written as Chang, Jang, Cheung, Chong, Cheang or Truong (which all above is written as "張/张"), depending on the dialect/topolect/language and romanization system. Zhang is also used as a first name in China (though rarely).
    • His Chinese given name, Fai, has a variety of transcriptions. It is the Cantonese romanization of Huī (輝/辉), which means "brightness". It is also an alternate Mandarin romanization of Fēi, which can be mean, among other transcriptions, "to fly" (飛/飞) or "rainfall/snowfall" (霏). Both of the latter meanings can allude to Frank being a legacy of Poseidon, the first to his shapeshifting ability and the second to Poseidon's domain over water.
    • His Chinese name in the Chinese translation of the book by Yuan-Liou Publishing is 張法義/张法义. "法" means "law" or "justice". 義/义 means righteousness, justiceand morality.
      • Noting the romanization of his name's translated version is different from the English version. (pinyin:Zhāng Fǎ Yì/jyutping:Zoeng1 Faat3 Ji6)
    • Zhang Fei (張飛/张飞) is the name of a historical warrior during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD), popularly fictionalized in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. His weapon was a spear, which may be a reference to Frank's weapon.
    • His name also means "call" in Persian.
    • Frank might be derived from Frankenstein, because of his fear of fire.
    • Frank can also mean honest, redirected from a Medieval Latin word, francus, meaning free.

    Trivia[]

    • Frank is fourth generation Chinese-Canadian, meaning that his family moved to Canada in the time of his great-grandparents.
    • According to Grandma Zhang in The Son of Neptune, Frank's family is descended from an ancient bloodline of princes and heroes which Frank was unaware of. This is because he is a direct descendant of Periclymenus, the Prince of Pylos who is also an Argonaut and the grandson of Poseidon.
    • Frank has both Roman and Greek lineage because his ancestor is Poseidon, a Greek god, and his father is Mars, a Roman god.
    • Among the seven heroes, he is one of three, along with Hazel Levesque (Louisiana French) and Leo Valdez (Spanish & Morse code), who speaks a language not inherent from their respective godly parents, because Frank can speak Canadian French and a little bit of Chinese.
    • In The Son of Neptune, the only word he recognizes in Chinese is his last name, 張/张, but in The Mark of Athena, he could read in Chinese, and found the location of Arachne's lair under the Emmanuel Building posted by a Chinese tourist. This suggests that he learned a little more Chinese since then, although in the case of The Mark of Athena, it was only telling where a tourist had marked the building on Google Maps.
    • He is apparently an exception among demigods as he is diagnosed with neither ADHD nor Dyslexia. Instead he is lactose-intolerant. Unfortunately for him, he "loves ice cream, too."
    • His favorite meal for breakfast is a poached egg and bacon on toast with a glass of orange juice, which Hazel (his girlfriend) made for him when he, Percy, and Hazel went to Grandma Zhang's house.
    • Prior to The Tyrant's Tomb, his life force was connected to a piece of wood like the hero Meleager and he would have died if it is ever completely burned.
    • The ogres at Grandma Zhang's house who wanted to eat Frank to gain his powers may be a reference to the Chinese legend/novel Journey to the West (西遊記/西游记), where monsters and demons wish to eat the flesh of the monk Tang Xuanzang (唐玄奘) to gain immortality.
    • His shapeshifting abilities may be also be a Journey to the West reference, in which the Monkey King Sun Wukong (孫悟空/孙悟空) can also shapeshift.
    • His name is a reference to the weapons he uses, the spear and bow. Frank is a name that originated from the Germanic tribe called the Franks, who got their name from the type of spear they used. Also in Chinese, the last name Zhang can mean archer or drawing a bow.
    • He's related to Percy Jackson through his mother, Emily, as her family descends from Periclymenus — a grandson of Poseidon.
      • This technically makes Percy his several times great-grand uncle, something that Frank is uncomfortable discussing.
    • Frank is one of six known demigods (the others being NicoBiancaKayla Knowles, Mallory Keen and Paolo Montes) to not be born in the United States, the country the gods currently live in, as he was born in Vancouver, Canada.
      • Frank is also the only one of the Seven not to be born in the United States.
    • Before he was claimed by Mars, he hoped that Apollo would claim him.
    • Frank was the only demigod who in The Son of Neptune did not have strange demigod dreams.
    • In The Son of Neptune, it says that Frank has a flat-topped wedge haircut, but in his official picture he has a crew cut.
    • Vitellius told Frank that his archery was unmanly, but this is inaccurate as battlefield archery only went out of practice after Rome fell in the 5th century. Until then, Rome created some of the best mounted bow like catapults (e.g. the Ballista).
    • Frank met Mars, his father, five days after the fifth anniversary of when Percy, Annabeth, and Grover first met Ares.
    • He is one of the only known demigod's to have family with connections to the other pantheons, as he’s is a son of Mars and a descendant of Poseidon.
    • Frank is the only known demigod to be a school spelling bee champion.
    • Frank is the only demigod seen in the series to have been given the Mars Blessing twice.
    • He is the only known male Greek Legacy in modern day.
    • Frank is one of the two characters in the both series to get Ares' Blessing, the other being Clarisse La Rue.
    • Frank is technically the second Canadian demigod to appear in the series, the first being Kayla Knowles. But at the time of her debut this was not known.
    • Frank, Hazel Levesque, and Annabeth Chase are the only demigods among the seven to see their godly parent in both Greek and Roman forms.
    • Triptolemus offering to take him on as an apprentice is an allusion to the fact that some cults worship Mars as an agricultural god along with his other domains. This is because the earliest Roman soldiers were former farmers.
    • Frank has a habit to read tourist brochures.
    • As of The Tyrant's Tomb, his curse was broken when he intentionally burnt up the stick to destroy Caligula and somehow managed to change his destiny in the process.
    • Frank is the first legacy to have a point of view in the series.
    • Frank is the first being, mortal or otherwise, to kill a Greco-Roman god. He kills Caligula in The Tyrant's Tomb, and wounds Commodus enough for Apollo to then kill him.
      • However this could be partially due to their Fasces, which aided in them becoming god-emperors, being destroyed earlier that day.
    • Frank's curse of his life being destroyed if his piece of wood burned was brought up as part of the Prophecy of Seven several times in The Son of Neptune and The Mark of Athena, in relation to the lines "To Storm or Fire the World must fall" though this plot thread was abandoned by The House of Hades and later books.
    • Rick Riordan may have taken inspiration about the idea of Frank's Stick to a myth that features the Fates about a boy named Meleager, who is cursed by the Fates immediately after he was born wherein Lachesis gave him a noble mind, Clotho gave him a brave heart, and Atropos gave him a block of wood, saying that he would live as long as the wood wasn't destroyed. In The Tyrant's Tomb, Apollo compares Frank's fate to Meleagar's.
    • In The Tyrant's Tomb, Frank tells Terminus to "Do the Wakanda thing." However, this reference is anachronistic, as The Tyrant's Tomb took place around 2011, while Infinity War took place in 2018, meaning "the Wakanda thing" wouldn't have existed yet.
    • Frank's birthday is the same day as Rick Riordan, the author of the series.
